Glossary of Chess Terms, Definitions, and Acronyms

Chess has a rich vocabulary with many terms and acronyms ranging from from ACP to Zwischenzug. Here we provide an alphabetical list of chess terms along with their definitions as well as various acronyms and their definitions. It is our intention for this to be the most comprehensive and complete list available on the Internet. Our glossary of terms and acronyms will be updated on a regular basis as our readers inform us of additions.

Chess Terms [A]

ACP [Top]

Acronym
Association of Chess Professionals.

Brief History
Founded in 2003 to represent professional chess players in discussions with FIDE and other chess organizers. Their first elected officers were, President, Joel Lautier, Secretary, Bartlomiej Macieja, Treasurer, and Almira Skripchenko.

Side Note
They organized the ACP Tour in 2004, described as a tournament circuit to regroup all important tournaments in the world during a one-year chess season. Each player taking part in the tour gain points according to a ranking system.



Action Chess [Top]

Definition
A game where each player only has 30 minutes to make all his moves.



Active [Top]

Definition
A chess piece that is able to move or control many squares, or an aggressive move, line of play, or position.

Side Note
When mentioned in lieu of a player’s style, it denotes a preference for sharp, tactical or vibrant types of play.



Adjournment [Top]

Definition
Adjourned means that the game is suspended and continued at a later time, usually on another day.

Side Note
The Tournament Director (TD) first specifies that one of the players will prepare the next move in secret. The secret move is called 'the sealed move'.



Advantage [Top]

Definition
Having a superiority in position based on a particular imbalance or series of imbalances.

Algebraic Notation [Top]

Definition
A method for writing moves down by using the names of the pieces and the ranks and files. Replaced older Descriptive Notation (“P-K4" is now "e4") about 1970.

Amateur [Top]

Definition
In chess, a non-master. At the US Amateur, masters cannot play.At the US Amateur Team tournaments, the team has to average below master rating. Note: in chess, amateurs can win money, sometimes quite a bit at tournaments like the World Open.



Analysis [Top]

Definition
The calculation of a series of moves in a given position. This can be done in actual tournament conditions (in which you are not allowed to touch the pieces) or in a calmer scenario in which the pieces can be moved about (such analysis is often written down for future study or reference). The purpose of analysis is to discover the best move or plan; there is no limit to its length.



Annotation [Top]

Definition
Written comments, prose, chess symbols, or actual moves about a position, or game.



Attack [Top]

Definition
To make a threat or threats against a specific piece or area of the board.

Hi Henry,

You are correct, I have been extremely busy lately. I have been doing a lot of research on chess terms and have compiled over 150 so far. I want this to be one of the most comprehensive lists available, outlined in an alphabetical format. Once complete it will take over 10 separate posts each linking to each other.

It is hard to tell, but the truth be known, I have gone through every post, and I have updated every article. Some SEO, a lot of formating, and I have linked related articles to each other. That was a big job and took several days to complete.
