The Elo method was adopted in 1970 by FIDE for rating world class players. Equality [Top] Definition A situation in which neither side has an advantage over the opponent. Example Where both Black and White have approximately the same chances to win the game. Side Note Equality in a position doesn't mean that the game is necessarily a draw. See Static Equality and Dynamic Equality Endgame [Top] Definition The endgame is the third and last stage of a chess game. There are few pieces on the board, the Kings are more active, and Pawn promotion is a key objective. En Passant [Top] Definition A French term that literally means “in passing.” When a pawn advances two squares something it can only do if it has not yet moved, and passes an enemy pawn on an adjacent file that has advanced to its fifth rank, it may be captured by that enemy pawn as if the advancing pawn had moved only one square. This optional capture may be made only on the first opportunity, else the right in that instance is permanently lost. Side Note See Special Moves - En Passant En Prise [Top] Definition A French term meaning “in take.” It describes a piece or pawn that is unprotected and exposed to capture. Pronunciation "on preez," rhymes with, "on freeze." Exchange [Top] Definition An exchange means mutual capture of pieces of equal value. Example A Queen for a Queen, a Pawn for a Pawn, or a minor piece for a minor piece. Side Note There can be more than two pieces involved in an exchange or trade, if several pieces are captured in a sequence of almost consecutive moves. Also, exchange can mean two different things depending whether it is 'an exchange' or 'the exchange'. Exchange, The [Top] Definition "The Exchange," means the trade of a Rook for a minor piece. The player capturing the Rook wins "the exchange." The player losing the Rook loses "the exchange." Expert [Top] Definition Someone with a US Chess Federation rating between 2000 and 2199. Note: This is a work in progress. As more terms are added this will be broken into alphabetical sections from A-Z for terms and definitions, and a separate section will be added for acronyms.
